Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail possible in NRW

Residents of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in Germany should prepare for a period of unsettled weather, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

Temperatures are predicted to be warm on Friday, reaching between 27 and 31 degrees Celsius. However, the pleasant conditions are expected to give way to showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the northwestern parts of the state from Friday afternoon. The DWD has not ruled out severe weather events, including hail, heavy rain, and hurricane-force wind gusts reaching up to 110 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters anticipate localized rainfall of up to 30 liters per square meter in a short period. Overnight into Saturday, temperatures are expected to drop to around 14 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of lingering thunderstorms.

The outlook for Saturday suggests continued unfavorable weather, with rain and thunderstorms persisting. The DWD forecasts potential heavy rainfall of up to 20 liters per square meter within an hour, especially in the southwestern regions. Stormy gusts may accompany the thunderstorms, while maximum temperatures are expected to slightly decrease to between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius.

Sunday is forecast to begin with significant cloud cover and rain showers. Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain remain a possibility. Meteorologists expect maximum temperatures to range between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius, with moderate winds.
