Severe Weather Alert: Croatia Warns of Stormy Winds, Hail, and Heavy Downpours

Croatia is bracing for a significant change in weather as the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued warnings for severe conditions expected to begin Monday.

The forecast indicates a shift from current variable weather to a more unstable pattern. Western parts of the country will experience increasing cloud cover, falling temperatures, rain, and scattered heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. The DHMZ warns of the possibility of localized severe storms, hail, and even waterspouts along the Adriatic coast.

Meteorologist Dunja Plačko-Vršnak detailed the expected conditions for Monday. The northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar regions will see rain and thunderstorms, potentially severe, with strong winds gusting up to storm force. Temperatures in mountainous areas will range from 27-30°C, while coastal areas could reach 29-32°C.

In Monday, with clouds gradually increasing from the west, in the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar, already in places in the morning, and especially in the afternoon and evening, rain, often in the form of showers with thunderstorms, locally even thunderstorms, hail is also possible.

Similar unstable conditions are predicted for central and southern Dalmatia, with local showers and thunderstorms likely in the evening and overnight, accompanied by strong winds. Eastern Croatia and central Croatia will also experience increasing cloudiness and a risk of localized heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the evening. Temperatures across the country will generally be warm, with highs ranging from the high 20s to low 30s Celsius.

The unstable weather is expected to continue into Tuesday, with cooler temperatures and intermittent rain expected inland. Mid-week may bring more sunshine, but Thursday could see a return to unsettled conditions. Coastal areas will also experience wind shifts, with a potential for bora winds early in the week and southerly winds later.
