Severely injured hiker rescued between thunderstorms on Hochstaufen mountain

Mountain rescue teams successfully saved a severely injured hiker from the Hochstaufen mountain, located near Bad Reichenhall, navigating treacherous conditions between two intense thunderstorms. The dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Thursday after the 22-year-old hiker from Saxony fell, sustaining a deep, bone-deep cut to his leg.

Initially, the injured hiker and his companion were forced to shelter in a makeshift emergency bivouac due to an approaching thunderstorm. The hiker, who is a trained paramedic, was able to assess his own injury and guide his companion through first-aid measures while awaiting rescue.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the volatile weather. A medical helicopter from Salzburg could not initially reach the site due to the conditions. However, the crew of the Kitzbühel rescue helicopter 'Christophorus 4' seized a brief lull in the storm. They managed to land a doctor on the mountain and subsequently airlift the injured hiker using a rescue winch.

As fog and storm clouds began to gather again, the helicopter had to land in the valley. Meanwhile, additional mountain rescue personnel ascended from the north side to reach the accident site. In another short break in the weather, the helicopter returned to retrieve the doctor, rescuers, and equipment from the mountain, completing the challenging operation.
