Sexuality doesn't affect an athlete's abilities, influencer Joona Hellman reminds

Social media influencer and television personality Joona Hellman is challenging conventional narratives in sports and literature with his new young adult novel, "Polte." Co-written with author J. S. Meresmaa, the book centers on Joose, a promising young footballer who develops a relationship with Eelis, a character who is more open about his sexuality.

Hellman questions why heterosexual love stories are simply labeled as "love stories," while books featuring same-sex relationships are often categorized specifically as "gay books." This distinction, he suggests, highlights a societal bias that needs addressing.

Speaking directly to young athletes who may be struggling with their sexual identity, Hellman offers a message of reassurance. "Remember that there is nothing wrong with you," he states, aiming to create a more inclusive environment in sports where athletes feel safe to be themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination. The novel's themes explore love, identity, and the pressures faced by young people in the public eye.
