Shahril Confirms Bid for FAM Presidency

Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar has formally entered the race for the top position at the Football Association of Malaysia, setting up a potentially competitive presidential election at the association’s September 17 congress.

Shahril, the deputy president of the Selangor Football Association and a former FAM executive committee member, confirmed in a brief post that he had completed his nomination submission. “Hello, Alhamdulillah, I’ve submitted it,” he wrote.

Before filing the nomination, Shahril said he would decide whether to accept or reject the candidacy after discussing it with Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the Selangor crown prince and FAS president. His confirmation indicates that he has received Tengku Amir’s backing.

Shahril is regarded as a potential contender because of his corporate background and long involvement in football. The September election is expected to involve a three-way contest between Shahril, FAM honorary president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin and Malaysian Football League president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan. Hamidin and Ab Ghani have received nominations but have not yet finalized their positions. FAM was expected to announce the list of candidates later in the day.
