Shakira and Burna Boy Headline Star-Studded Opening of 2026 World Cup in Mexico City

Mexico City buzzed with excitement on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as the nation celebrated the opening of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The government declared a public holiday to mark the highly anticipated event, held at the historic Estadio Azteca, which recently underwent renovations.

The legendary stadium, famous for hosting iconic matches including Maradona's "Hand of God" goal in 1986, now becomes the sole venue to host three different World Cup editions: 1970, 1986, and 2026. Ninety minutes before the inaugural match between Mexico and South Africa, the opening ceremony commenced, transforming the pitch into a vibrant display of tradition and world-class entertainment under the theme "papel picado."

Global music stars illuminated the ceremony. Shakira and Burna Boy captivated the audience with the first live performance of the official 2026 World Cup song, "Dai Dai." Shakira's appearance was particularly notable, recalling her success with "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" at the 2010 World Cup. She previously told People Magazine that each World Cup offers a magical experience, uniting people amidst sensitive global social and political climates.

The event also featured performances by Alejandro Fernandez, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, Mana, and Tyla. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and K-pop star EJAE also graced the stage. The ceremony included cultural parades, the popular Labubu mascot, and a parade of flags representing all 48 participating nations, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. FIFA also released the largest-ever World Cup album, featuring 38 artists and 18 songs, promoting themes of unity and diversity. The World Cup festivities will extend to Canada and the United States, with ceremonies planned in Toronto and other host cities.
