Sharaa: Golan is Syrian Land, Any Other Status is Invalid

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has unequivocally asserted that the Golan Heights remain "occupied Syrian land," declaring any acknowledgment of Israeli sovereignty over the territory as "null and void." Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Sharaa highlighted that the international community does not recognize Israel's claims. He accused Israel of violating the 1974 disengagement agreement and stated that Damascus is actively pursuing a security deal to ensure Israeli withdrawal and a return to the 1974 lines, potentially paving the way for long-term negotiations on the Golan issue.

Sharaa described the current regional climate as "difficult," necessitating exceptional solutions. Syria's strategic objective, he explained, is to steer clear of alignment with competing blocs and instead foster a role as a bridge between global powers. He emphasized that Syria now maintains "ideal relations" with major global players like the US, Russia, and China, as well as key European nations and regional states. This diplomatic stance reflects Syria's desire to carve out an independent path amidst complex geopolitical rivalries.

Reflecting on past conflicts, Sharaa acknowledged Syria's previous avoidance of direct confrontation despite Iranian-linked attacks during the war against Assad. He stressed Syria's commitment to preventing war due to its dangerous repercussions and praised US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the war in Lebanon, expressing hope for a broader regional reset. Syria, having endured years of war, displacement, and chemical attacks, prioritizes avoiding new conflicts as the "natural and correct path."

US envoy Tom Barrack observed a shift in Washington's approach, noting Syria's increased stability following a reduced military presence and troop withdrawal. He pointed out that Syria has become a more stable area in the region, having not engaged in hostilities with Israel since December 8, 2024, while signaling openness to a non-aggression pact. Barrack also addressed Israel's perspective, citing concerns over the Druze community and Prime Minister Netanyahu's statement that recent events have altered Israel's adherence to previous lines. Barrack cautioned against relying solely on military solutions, arguing they perpetuate cycles of conflict.
