Sharp weather shift coming, with temperatures falling by up to 7 degrees and strong Aegean winds

Greece is heading into a sharp change in weather from Tuesday, with temperatures falling and winds strengthening, especially across the Aegean.

Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas said a low-pressure system moving from Italy toward the region would affect several parts of the country. Western Greece is expected to see the biggest drop, with temperatures falling from around 34°C to about 27°C. Highs in northern Greece are forecast near 26°C, while Thessaly and central Greece should reach about 28°C.

The change will arrive more gradually in Attica and eastern Central Greece. High temperatures are expected to persist there for a little longer before falling toward 28°C. The European ECMWF model’s 15-day outlook shows a clear, gradual decline nationwide, although some areas could remain warm until around September 11 or 12.

The model puts the median maximum temperature in northern Greece at 26.6°C, down from 29.6°C. In western Greece, it is expected to fall from 34.2°C to 27.2°C. The west also has the strongest rainfall signal, with a 47% chance of at least 5 millimetres of rain on September 13. Central Greece and Thessaly have moderate rain probabilities, while the signal remains particularly weak in the Aegean and Crete.

The main immediate concern is wind rather than a prolonged nationwide rain event. Local strengthening is expected in the Aegean, with a particularly strong signal for winds of at least six Beaufort on Andros on September 8.
