Sheinbaum invites Petro back to Mexico to give academic lectures

Claudia Sheinbaum has invited former Colombian President Gustavo Petro to return to Mexico and give lectures through the Institute of History of the Mexican Revolution, an academic and research institution.

The invitation followed a meeting between the two leaders at Mexico’s National Palace. Sheinbaum said they discussed a book Petro is preparing, titled “Capital in the 21st Century: Political Economy of the Climate Crisis.” The book examines foreign influence in electoral processes and the impact of artificial intelligence.

According to Sheinbaum, Petro described a broader analysis that draws not only on Colombia. It addresses how digital platforms can be used from abroad to influence election results and how right-wing groups have coordinated across countries. Sheinbaum summarized his argument as an examination of “how the international right has organized to influence different places.”

Sheinbaum said Mexico’s situation is “very different” and argued that a social majority supports the transformation promoted by her movement and the federal government’s results.

Petro visited Mexico after Colombia’s current president, Abelardo de la Espriella, won the election. During a lecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Petro said “algorithms” and “technofascism” had helped the far-right candidate and warned that similar methods could be used in Brazil’s general elections this year or Mexico’s 2027 midterm elections.
