Sheinbaum meets with U.S. Trade Representative over T-MEC

Mexico City – President Claudia Sheinbaum held a crucial meeting at the National Palace with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, signaling Mexico's proactive stance in the ongoing discussions surrounding the T-MEC (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). Accompanied by Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, Greer's visit underscores the importance both nations place on the trade relationship and the collaborative spirit in addressing its complexities.

We are happy to receive him, he is going to have a conversation with the President. This is a very good sign for Mexico, we are going to be working on the conversations about the Treaty.

During the high-level talks, President Sheinbaum clearly articulated Mexico's key priorities for the T-MEC review. A central point of discussion was Mexico's strong desire for the United States to re-evaluate and potentially remove tariffs imposed on Mexican steel, aluminum, and automobiles. This focus highlights Mexico's commitment to ensuring fair trade practices and fostering a more balanced economic partnership under the agreement.

It is the progress of the dialogue we have had in relation to the T-MEC, some specific proposals that we are going to present, that were presented in the last meeting that was in Washington, it is related to (tariffs) on steel, aluminum and automobiles. I would not want to advance much more until we have the meeting.

We care a lot about the issue of steel, aluminum and automobiles, that an agreement could be reached beforehand, beyond the negotiation itself, that it be taken into account. We want the treaty to remain with some improvements, in essence it is a review.
