Sheinbaum mocks Fox-Alito alliance as a route back to corruption and privilege

Claudia Sheinbaum mocked a possible alliance between former Mexican President Vicente Fox and Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI. The two met on Friday to discuss creating an opposition front for the 2027 elections.

At a news conference, Sheinbaum said the proposed alliance offered only a return to corruption and privilege. She contrasted it with what she called the Fourth Transformation’s “project for the nation,” arguing that the opposition partners represented a return to a past that Mexicans had already experienced.

Traitor to democracy

Sheinbaum also invoked criticism of Fox among the public, describing him as a “traitor to democracy” over the political process against Andrés Manuel López Obrador, then head of government of the Federal District, and over the alleged fraud in the 2006 presidential election.

Sheinbaum then ridiculed Fox’s visit to Moreno’s PRI offices. “Fox now puts on a red tie and goes to the offices of the PRI, of ‘Alito,’ to say, ‘we’re going to go out together.’ Well, there they are. Keep going. They are on a very good path, a very good path. The path back to corruption and privileges,” she said.

Sheinbaum added that the proposed alliance would not fare well if it continued offering that message, while her side offered a national project. “That past we already lived through, and it is not precisely what the people of Mexico want,” she said.
