Sheinbaum on World Cup Inauguration: 'We Don't Need to Rub Shoulders with the Elite'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum asserted that her administration has fundamentally changed how the country is governed, shifting from serving a select few to ruling "by the people and for the people" under the banner of the "fourth transformation." Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Regional Specialty Hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Manzanillo, Colima, Sheinbaum, who holds a physics background, highlighted this transformation.

She directly addressed criticism for not attending the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, stating, "We don't need to rub shoulders with the elite." She explained that she chose to give her ticket to a young fan, noting the exorbitant prices of up to 120,000 pesos for entry. She contrasted her administration's approach with previous "neoliberal" governments, emphasizing her commitment to being "always with the people, close to the people."

Sheinbaum framed her government's actions as the "second floor" of the fourth transformation, driven by principles and a commitment to public service. She reiterated her belief that when corruption is eliminated, there is more than enough to go around, leading to tangible results, honesty, and love for the country. "He fares poorly who does not believe in Mexico, who does not love Mexico," she declared, extending this to both sports and politics.

Zoé Robledo, director of IMSS, praised Sheinbaum's approach, noting her presence at the grassroots level rather than in the VIP boxes during the World Cup opening. He also highlighted the new hospital's significance for Colima's healthcare. Governor Indira Vizcaíno also spoke at the event, underscoring the health initiatives for the state.
