Sheinbaum reveals Trump personally invited her to World Cup final, discussed trade

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed she attended the 2026 World Cup final in New York following a personal invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum stated that while she had initially considered not attending, a phone call with Trump on Friday changed her mind. He personally invited her to sit with him at the match, prompting her decision to go. "If you invite me, President Trump," she recalled saying, before accepting the invitation. Sheinbaum traveled on a commercial flight from Cancun, but it was canceled due to thunderstorms. She ultimately flew on a military aircraft. At the stadium, Sheinbaum engaged in brief conversations with Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We did have some opportunity to comment on the trade issue," she noted. The discussion on trade took place as the second round of talks for the review of the North American trade agreement (T-MEC) commenced. Sheinbaum expressed hope for reaching agreements during the week and announced she would host U.S. Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Mexico City. She described the atmosphere as cordial and highlighted the coordination among the three World Cup host nations. Sheinbaum participated in the award ceremony, presenting the Golden Ball to Spain's Rodri alongside Trump, Carney, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Mexico hosted 13 matches, becoming the first country to host three World Cups.
