Sheinbaum Says Everything Around Amílcar Olán Is Under Investigation and Demands Scientific Evidence

“Everything is investigated, everything,” Claudia Sheinbaum said when asked about Amílcar Olán, a friend of Andrés Manuel López Beltrán who has been linked to a network involving relatives, politicians, officials, businesspeople and friends with government roles or contracts.

At her morning news conference at the National Palace on Wednesday, Sept. 2, Mexico’s president insisted that any inquiry must rest on “scientific evidence.” Otherwise, she said, the claims amount only to what appears in a magazine, newspaper or social network.

“Everything is investigated, everything. There is nothing that is not investigated, but it has to be based on scientific evidence because otherwise it is what a magazine, a newspaper or a network says. So everything is investigated, both administratively and criminally,” Sheinbaum said.

She said the attorney general could provide information about the investigation into fuel smuggling. Asked whether the Finance Ministry had information concerning Olán, she answered yes and added that the Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Government was also involved.

El Universal reported that Juan Domingo Beckmann and Mauricio Garduño González Elizondo are partners in JDBL y Compañía, a company created during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to invest in ports and fuel supply. Documents cited by the newspaper show that the company was established in Mexico City on July 17, 2020, with a 99-year duration.

The report also described a private meeting between the two businessmen and Andrés Manuel López Beltrán. Videos released by El Universal columnist Héctor de Mauleón showed a meeting at the Magazzino restaurant in Mexico City’s Condesa neighborhood involving Beckmann, who sits on the federal government’s Business Advisory Council, Garduño and López Beltrán. The developments come as Mexico’s attorney general’s office and U.S. security agencies, including the FBI, investigate an alleged fuel-smuggling network connected to ports and border customs in Tamaulipas.
