Sheinbaum sees World Cup final trip as 'diplomatically important'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced her attendance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York, describing the trip as "important in diplomatic terms." She noted that the leaders of the three co-host nations, the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be present. Sheinbaum received an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump and confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend.

"I considered it important in diplomatic terms that the three countries that hosted this World Cup be there," Sheinbaum said in a social media video. "It is also a demonstration that there is good coordination and good collaboration with the United States government." She planned to represent Mexico at the event before returning to Mexico City early Monday.

Reports indicated Sheinbaum's flight was canceled due to bad weather, with options for her travel, including military aircraft, being considered. This trip follows criticism after she skipped the World Cup's opening match in Mexico, opting instead to give her ticket to an indigenous child. She had previously attended football festivals in Mexico City to watch national team matches.

The president's travel coincides with Mexico's preparations for the third round of T-MEC trade negotiations with the US and Canada, scheduled for the following week in Mexico City. This round marks a new phase for the treaty, which remains in effect until 2036 but is subject to annual reviews.
