Sheinbaum to meet CNTE Section 22 on Oaxaca agreements, plans nationwide teacher promotion reform

President Claudia Sheinbaum is preparing to meet with leaders of the Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers (CNTE) on August 13 at the National Palace. The meeting's primary objective is to review the fulfillment of agreements previously made with the Oaxaca teaching staff.

Sheinbaum clarified that the discussion will be strictly limited to demands specific to Oaxaca and will not constitute a negotiation with the entire CNTE. "We are going to talk about the agreements that were made with the Ministry of the Interior and the Secretary of Education with Section 22. That is the topic we are going to discuss," she stated. Key issues on the agenda include commitments related to the allocation of new teaching positions in Oaxaca and other matters pertinent to education in the state.

During her recent visit to Oaxaca, Sheinbaum agreed to the meeting, emphasizing that only these specific issues concerning Oaxaca's education sector would be addressed. She also noted that federal officials maintain ongoing dialogue with educators and recalled a previous meeting with Section 7 of Chiapas. The President confirmed that the federal government will initiate nationwide consultations to reform the teacher career system, replacing the current Unit for the System for the Career of Teachers and Educators (Usicamm). This process will begin with a survey to gauge teacher concerns, followed by school-by-school consultations across the country.
