Sheinbaum to travel on military plane to US for World Cup final, will meet Trump

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is set to travel to New York on a National Defense aircraft to attend the 2026 World Cup final. The decision comes after her scheduled commercial flight from Cancun was canceled due to weather conditions. Sheinbaum emphasized the diplomatic importance of the trip, stating that the leaders of the three host nations would be present.

The heads of state represent the three host nations. The return of the first Mexican president is scheduled for Sunday night, July 19.

Sheinbaum accepted an invitation from former U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the match, which will feature Argentina against Spain. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Charest is also expected to be in attendance. "This is a demonstration that there is good coordination, good collaboration with the United States government," Sheinbaum said in a video message, highlighting the diplomatic significance of the event.
