Shettima begins two-week vacation

Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima commenced a two-week leave on Thursday, marking his first period of absence since taking office on May 29, 2023. The leave, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is intended for "study, reflection and intellectual renewal."

According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, the break will allow Shettima to review the administration's ongoing programs. It will also deepen his understanding of national and global policy issues, preparing him for future responsibilities as the government advances its "Renewed Hope Agenda."

Shettima has remained engaged in the coordination and supervision of several strategic government initiatives, particularly in economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

Since assuming his role, Shettima has been actively engaged in overseeing key government initiatives focused on economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation, and regional cooperation. He also presides over the National Economic Council, a crucial body comprising state governors, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, and other officials who deliberate on economic policy and citizen welfare.

Shettima has also represented Tinubu at major international and regional engagements. He has stood in for the President at G20 and AU-EU summits last November, among other high-level multilateral gatherings, particularly when Tinubu opted to remain in the country at the height of the kidnappings in Papiri, Niger State, and Eruku, Kwara State.

Additionally, Vice President Shettima has represented President Tinubu at significant international and regional forums, including G20 and AU-EU summits. He has stepped in for the President during critical times, such as when Tinubu remained in Nigeria during a period of heightened kidnappings in Niger and Kwara states. Shettima is expected to return to his official duties around August 20, 2026, reaffirming his commitment to loyalty, duty, and service to Nigeria.
