Shettima Returns to Nigeria After AU Summit in Angola

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a high-level African Union summit in Luanda, Angola.

Nigeria used the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government to press for stronger African-led mechanisms to prevent and resolve conflicts. It also called for urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks targeting Africans and other nationals in South Africa.

The Nigerian delegation backed the Luanda Action Plan and urged AU member states to take greater collective responsibility for peace and security on the continent. Nigeria also argued for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture.

The position presented in Luanda emphasized greater African ownership of solutions to conflicts in Africa. Shettima returned to Nigeria after concluding his engagements at the summit.
