Shilin Night Market Renovations Prioritize Safety Amidst Political Criticism

A local community leader has refuted claims that ongoing renovations in Shilin Night Market's 15th Street are causing undue hardship to vendors and consumers. Hsu Li-pi, the head of Yixin Village in Shilin District, stated on Facebook that the project, which addresses critical public safety and environmental concerns, has been in the works for nearly two years through extensive local coordination.

Hsu clarified that the construction is not blocking major thoroughfares but is focused on 15th Street, a narrow alley connecting Datong and Jihe Roads. He explained that the area suffers from aging underground pipelines, including corroded gas lines and leaking water pipes, posing significant risks. Additionally, worn-out, slippery tiles on the walkways have caused injuries, and the presence of electrical poles and transformers near residences creates safety hazards and affects living quality.

The renovations also aim to combat severe rodent infestations and improve the overall ambiance of the alley, which has become a neglected area, impacting the night market's image. Hsu emphasized that these improvements are crucial for the long-term sustainability and appeal of the Shilin Night Market, arguing that maintaining the status quo would be detrimental to its future.

He acknowledged that the construction might cause temporary inconvenience but stressed that the benefits of enhanced safety, cleanliness, and a better consumer environment far outweigh the short-term disruption. Hsu also suggested that some criticisms might be politically motivated, potentially linked to local elections, and accused certain individuals of distorting the facts to manipulate public opinion and attack the project.
