Shin Tae-yong appointed Persija Jakarta coach; Governor hopes for 'special gift' for city's 500th anniversary

Shin Tae-yong (STY), the former head coach of the Indonesian national football team, has been appointed as the new head coach of Persija Jakarta. The club announced the three-year contract for the South Korean tactician on Monday, June 8, 2026. The appointment marks a significant move for Persija, a club affectionately known as 'Macan Kemayoran' (The Royal Bengal Tigers).

Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, welcomed STY's appointment and expressed high hopes for his tenure. "As the Governor of Jakarta, I certainly hope that Persija, under Shin Tae-yong's guidance, can bring a special gift for Jakarta," he stated, referencing the upcoming 500th anniversary of the city in 2027. The governor believes STY's extensive experience, including his previous role with the national team, will be instrumental in elevating Persija's performance and leading them to championship titles.

Because Shin Tae-yong has experience, having been our national team coach, he surely has a way to make Persija perform better. I have high hopes for that.

Pramono highlighted the strong existing talent within the Persija squad, mentioning players like Rizky Ridho, Witan Sulaeman, and Dony Tri Pamungkas. He is confident that STY possesses the strategic acumen to mold these players into a championship-winning team. The governor reiterated his wish for STY to achieve success in the upcoming season, aiming to present a championship trophy as a celebratory gift for Jakarta's milestone anniversary.
