Shocking footage: Taichung woman on YouBike cuts left at intersection, is hit by truck and dies

A fatal traffic accident occurred in Taichung, Taiwan, when an 82-year-old woman riding a YouBike was struck and killed by a truck. The incident happened early Wednesday morning at the intersection of Fuxing Road and Minsheng Road.

Surveillance footage captured the moment the woman, identified by her surname Zhang, was riding in the slow lane. As she approached the intersection, she appeared to veer left, crossing into the path of a truck traveling in the inner lane. The impact sent the woman flying, and she landed heavily on the road. She was rushed to Taichung Hospital but succumbed to her severe injuries.

The truck driver, a 50-year-old man surnamed Xie, was not injured and tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Police are investigating the precise cause of the crash, pointing out that the intersection is equipped with signs for two-stage U-turns and a designated waiting area. Zhang's failure to use this facility and her sudden left turn from the slow lane are considered potential factors.

Authorities are reminding cyclists that failing to follow proper turning procedures at intersections can result in fines. The detailed cause of the accident will be determined through further analysis and investigation.
