Shocking Revelations at Maradona Trial as Lead Defendant Challenges Medical Evidence

Leopoldo Luque went on the offensive in the trial over Diego Maradona’s death, challenging the conclusions presented by medical experts and rejecting their account of the football legend’s condition.

Testifying in the San Isidro court, the neurosurgeon accused the experts of “confirmation bias.” He said they had relied on the autopsy findings and Maradona’s medical history while effectively reaching their conclusions in advance. “The patient the experts described is not the same person we had when he was alive,” Luque told the court.

Luque also denied that Maradona had suffered serious heart, liver or kidney failure before his death. He said the tests had not shown such problems and that Maradona had not reported corresponding symptoms.

His testimony conflicts with evidence from several experts on a panel formed by the court. Since the trial began in April, those experts have pointed to serious deficiencies in the medical care Maradona received during the final weeks of his life.

Luque, who had a close relationship with the Argentine football icon, also defended his own role until the end. “He trusted me. I facilitated certain things,” he said in court. Seven healthcare professionals face charges in the case and are being examined over possible fatal negligence in Maradona’s treatment.
