Shot swallow-tailed kite flies free again after long recovery in Florida

A swallow-tailed kite, once grounded by a gunshot, has soared back into the skies of Florida. The bird, rescued by the conservation group Owl's Nest Sanctuary, arrived in late April with a fractured wing bone, a devastating injury for a species known for its effortless flight.

"For a bird that spends a large part of its life effortlessly soaring through the sky, it was inevitable to wonder if it would ever fly again," the sanctuary stated. The road to recovery was long and required dedicated care. Specialists collaborated with the veterinary team at Busch Gardens Tampa, providing intensive treatment, frequent bandage changes, and physical therapy.

After a month and a half, the kite showed significant improvement and began rehabilitation. Its caregivers provided a flight enclosure where it could practice its aerial skills. "Those first flights are always stressful, but each day it became stronger, faster, and more confident," the sanctuary reported. "Before long, it was soaring through our 30-meter flight enclosure just as nature intended."

In a heartwarming twist, the kite was joined by another swallow-tailed kite that had been injured in a collision. The two birds flew together for a week, a testament to their species' elegance and athleticism, before the injured kite was deemed ready for release back into its natural habitat.
