SII to study appeal against definitive dismissal of Sergio Jadue case

Chile's Internal Revenue Service (SII) is considering an appeal to overturn a court's decision to definitively dismiss a tax evasion case against former president of the National Professional Football Association (ANFP), Sergio Jadue. The case, which dates back to 2016, is connected to the broader FIFA Gate scandal.

Prosecutors allege that Jadue received illegal income through bribes in exchange for the improper awarding of broadcasting rights for international professional football tournaments. The SII had initially filed a criminal complaint on April 1, 2016, accusing Jadue of maliciously filing false or incomplete income tax returns. Specifically, the complaint stated he omitted over US$1.6 million in income that was channeled through a company registered in the Virgin Islands.

An expansion of the original complaint was filed on January 17, 2017, to include tax years not covered by the initial action. However, the 13th Guarantee Court of Santiago has now definitively dismissed the case against Jadue.

The SII announced through a statement that it will study the possibility of filing an appeal to reverse this dismissal. The agency aims to pursue the charges related to the alleged tax fraud and illicit gains Jadue purportedly obtained during his tenure leading the ANFP.
