Singapore cinema to exclusively screen 'The Odyssey' on 35mm film in Southeast Asia

Singapore's Shaw Theatres is set to become the sole cinema in Southeast Asia offering Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, 'The Odyssey,' on 35mm film.

This unique screening opportunity comes as Shaw Theatres recently restored two original 35mm film projectors from 1993. These projectors are now installed at their newly renovated Lido outlet, aiming to support film festivals and 35mm film events. Christopher Shaw, executive vice president of Shaw Theatres, noted that the last 35mm film screening at the chain was over 13 years ago.

"It is serendipitous that our first screening of 35mm film will be the blockbuster 'The Odyssey,' which was shot entirely on film," Shaw stated. "Lido is the only place in Southeast Asia that will be showing 'The Odyssey' on real celluloid film. So do come see it. It is truly an experience you can only get in a movie theatre."

Staff skilled in operating 35mm projectors are still with the company, and new personnel are undergoing training. The restored projectors are housed in the new Lido 1 and Lumiere Grand halls, which also feature modern Barco 4K digital-laser projection and Dolby 7.1 surround sound. However, the 35mm screenings of 'The Odyssey' will be exclusively in the Lumiere Grand hall.

Limited screenings of 'The Odyssey' on 35mm film commence Thursday, July 16. Shaw Theatres is also organizing giveaways and offering collectibles for attendees across various formats. Those purchasing tickets for the 35mm format will receive an A3 artwork poster, with only 650 available. Additionally, purchasing at least two IMAX tickets in a single transaction will grant a collectible movie pin.
