Singapore Foreign Minister Meets North Korean Counterpart in Pyongyang

North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui held talks with Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in Pyongyang on May 26, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The meeting, part of Balakrishnan's tour that also includes China and South Korea, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exchanging views on regional and international affairs.

During the discussions, Choe Son-hui reiterated North Korea's stance on developing friendly and cooperative relations with Singapore in line with the aspirations of both peoples. Balakrishnan expressed Singapore's hope for enhanced cooperation and wished the North Korean people greater success in their endeavors for national prosperity.

The talks likely covered the sensitive issue of the Korean Peninsula, given the context of regional diplomacy. Officials from both sides, including North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Song-il and Singapore's Ambassador to North Korea Ri Kil-song, attended the meeting.

A South Korean Foreign Ministry official noted that the meeting would provide an opportunity to hear detailed accounts of Balakrishnan's visit to North Korea, emphasizing Seoul's close attention to Pyongyang's diplomatic activities.
