Singer Osher Biton wins NIS 40 million in Israel's largest lottery prize since 2024

Singer Osher Biton has become the latest millionaire after winning the NIS 40 million (approximately $10.8 million USD) jackpot in Israel's Mifal Hapayis Lotto draw on Saturday night. This significant win concludes a streak of 16 consecutive draws where no participant claimed the first prize, allowing the jackpot to accumulate to its legal maximum.

Biton secured the NIS 40 million prize by correctly matching six numbers plus the "strong number." The lottery also awarded a second-place prize of NIS 375,000 to another participant who matched six numbers. Additionally, 79 individuals won NIS 6,748 each for matching five numbers and the strong number, while 352 participants received NIS 964 for matching five numbers.

The accumulation of the prize pool has been notably rapid. In mid-May, the first prize stood at NIS 30 million, with the Double Lotto option at NIS 60 million. The current NIS 40 million win in the regular Lotto draw matches a previous large payout in December 2024, which also remained at the maximum level for an extended period before being claimed in January 2025.

Major lottery winnings in Israel are subject to a substantial tax burden. Winners must pay a 35% tax, with an additional 5% surtax, resulting in a total tax of 40% on the prize money. The next draw will determine if the Double Lotto jackpot continues to grow or if another large prize will be claimed.
