Sirleaf: I Took Tough Decisions to Confront Corruption, Injustice in Liberia

Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf reflected on her decade in office, asserting that genuine leadership demands the courage to make difficult and unpopular decisions to combat corruption and injustice.

Speaking at a lecture honoring the late Nigerian businessman Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, Sirleaf, Africa's first democratically elected female head of state, stressed that leadership's true measure lies not in possessed power but in the lives positively impacted through its responsible use. She recounted facing choices that could alienate colleagues, authorities, or loved ones, yet maintained that confronting uncomfortable realities like corruption and injustice is a non-negotiable aspect of leadership.

Many times, I had to make decisions, decisions that I knew would have the effect of hurting others. Decisions that would not be well accepted by colleagues, by the powers, by authorities, and many times by the people I love. Yet, confronting uncomfortable realities, such as corruption, such as injustices, is difficult, but every leader must be prepared to face that.

"Truth must be a moral compass in turbulent times," Sirleaf declared, highlighting that speaking truth to power is a fundamental requirement for transparent governance. She advised leaders to withstand criticism and opposition when basing decisions on truth, principle, and the common good. This challenge, she noted, is amplified in the contemporary world by social media and artificial intelligence, urging critical assessment of information.

Sirleaf also emphasized the importance of conviction, stating that leaders must understand their purpose and pursue it with courage, even against daunting odds. She lauded Captain Okunbo as an example of a leader whose influence and resources were meaningfully applied to improving others' lives, suggesting Africa needs such leaders committed to service over mere ambition.
