Six arrested over Winneba mob attack that killed three and injured 15

Six people are in police custody after a mob attack at New Winneba in Ghana's Central Region left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

Police identified the suspects as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22. They are assisting with investigations.

The attack took place at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Police said about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze entered New Winneba armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks. The mob attacked some residents and damaged stores, homes and other property.

About 15 injured people, including a police officer, received treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. The hospital's medical officer confirmed three deaths. Police recovered a locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.

Officers from the Winneba, Agona Swedru and Mankessim divisions were deployed to reinforce security. The Inspector-General of Police's special team also arrived, along with two armored vehicles from National Police Headquarters. Police set up six snap-check points and increased daytime and nighttime patrols, while intelligence and criminal investigations officers monitored the area. Authorities said the situation remained calm and under control.
