Six goalkeepers who have scored in Premier League history

Scoring a goal is the ultimate ambition for any footballer, but for goalkeepers, finding the back of the net is an exceptionally rare feat. Since the Premier League's inception in 1992, only six goalkeepers have achieved this distinction, etching their names into English football history.

The pioneering goalkeeper to score was Peter Schmeichel, who netted for Aston Villa against Everton in October 2001. Despite his team's 3-2 loss, the Danish legend became the first goalkeeper to score in the competition. Brad Friedel followed in February 2004, scoring for Blackburn Rovers against Charlton Athletic. Though his late goal came in a 3-2 defeat, it marked another rare occasion.

Three years later, Tottenham Hotspur's Paul Robinson scored one of the Premier League's most unusual goals. A long free-kick, aided by a bounce, sailed over Watford's goalkeeper Ben Foster and into the net. In January 2012, Everton's Tim Howard became the fourth goalkeeper to score when a powerful clearance, propelled by strong winds, went over Bolton Wanderers' goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán. Howard, showing sportsmanship, refused to celebrate out of respect for his counterpart.

Asmir Begović added his name to the list in November 2013, scoring for Stoke City just 13 seconds into a match against Southampton. His extraordinary long kick traveled the length of the pitch, bouncing over the opposing goalkeeper, making it one of the longest goals ever recorded in professional football. The most recent goalkeeper to score is Liverpool's Alisson Becker, who headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner against West Bromwich Albion in May 2021 from a corner kick. This header made him the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to score with his head, a goal that proved crucial in Liverpool's successful bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
