WAFCON 2026: Morocco edge Algeria, Senegal beat Kenya to set up dramatic Group A finale

Hosts Morocco and Senegal are in strong positions to reach the Women's Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals after securing vital wins on Thursday. Morocco claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over rivals Algeria in a tense derby, while Senegal bounced back from a previous defeat to edge Kenya 1-0.

Senegal's Lionesses of Teranga revived their hopes with a decisive first-half strike from Seynabou Mbengue. After being released by Bineta Seck, Mbengue unleashed a powerful shot that goalkeeper Lilian Awuor had no chance to save. Kenya pressed for an equalizer, with captain Mwanalima Jereko's long-range effort narrowly missing the target before halftime. Senegal's Ndeye Awa Casset also came close to doubling the lead, but Awuor made an outstanding save.

The match was a physical and tactical battle, with both teams cautious after opening wins. Algeria defended resolutely, frustrating Morocco for long periods. Morocco increased their intensity after halftime, eventually finding the breakthrough through Mssoudy, setting up a dramatic final group stage clash against Senegal.
