Six new names inducted into Finland’s Ice Hockey Hall of Fame

Finland’s hockey honors will gain six new names, including Olympic champions, world champions, a Stanley Cup winner and a longtime figure in the sport.

The Hockey Museum’s selection committee chose former players Marko Anttila, Valtteri Filppula, Juuso Hietanen, Tomi Kallio and Sami Lepistö, along with hockey administrator Jukka Toivakka. They will be added to the Hockey Lions wall at the museum as numbers 287 through 292.

Anttila won Olympic gold and two world championships during his career. Filppula collected a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold and a world championship, while Hietanen also won Olympic and world gold. Lepistö was part of Finland’s 2011 world championship team.

Kallio played more than 1,000 games in Finland’s Liiga and won two Finnish championships. Toivakka has spent many years working as an influential figure in Finnish hockey.

The museum also awarded Sari Salmela the Yrjö Salminen lifetime achievement prize. Former NHL player Teppo Numminen chairs the selection committee. The hall has operated since 1985, and six is the largest number of names it can induct in a single year.
