Six Students Arrested in Eastern University Hazing Case

Six students from the Faculty of Communication and Business Studies at Eastern University's Trincomalee campus have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a severe hazing incident. The arrests follow a lengthy investigation into a complaint alleging that first-year students, admitted for the 2022/23 academic year, were subjected to sexual abuse and hazing on April 29, 2025.

The CID's Anti-Hazing Complaints Investigation Unit conducted the probe, leading to the apprehension of the six suspects. Notably, one of the arrested individuals is a female student. The suspects are scheduled to be presented before the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about ragging and abuse within Sri Lankan universities, prompting swift action from law enforcement to address the reported crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
