Skotheim falls to third place; medal drama awaits

Sander Aae Skotheim currently holds third place in the decathlon, with only the 1500-meter race remaining. The 24-year-old Norwegian athlete trails Niklas Kaul by 104 points for silver and leader Leo Neugebauer by 258 points for gold. The final event is scheduled to begin at 22:10.

Recent injuries have significantly limited Skotheim's training, particularly for the 1500 meters. Despite this, he remains a contender for a medal, though Neugebauer appears to have a strong lead for the gold medal. The competition for the remaining medals is expected to be primarily between Skotheim and Kaul.

Skotheim's personal best in the 1500 meters is 4:16. If he achieves this, he would accumulate 8501 total points. For him to win gold, Neugebauer would need to run slower than 5:08, and Kaul slower than 4:32. Other competitors, Jeff Tesselaar and Karel Tilga, are also in contention, with their medal chances dependent on Skotheim's performance and their own times.

Earlier in the competition, Skotheim dropped to third place after the javelin throw, where he achieved 729 points with a best throw of 59.43 meters. He had previously climbed to second place after the 110m hurdles, discus, and pole vault, having started the day in third. Skotheim's participation in the decathlon comes after a period of limited competition due to long-term injuries, and he had not completed a decathlon earlier this year.
