Slain Mexican mayor laid to rest amid heavy security, probe into alleged crime links

Family and friends gathered under a significant security presence to bid farewell to Valentín Lavín Romero, the municipal president of Temoac in Mexico's Morelos state, who was killed in an armed assault on July 22. The planned tribute at the municipal palace, the site of the assassination, was prevented by the State Attorney General's Office, which had secured the premises. This denial created a tense atmosphere, leading to the ceremony being moved to a nearby street before proceeding to the indigenous community of Huazulco for burial. This was not the first violent incident targeting the mayor; he had previously survived an armed attack on the Mexico-Oaxaca federal highway in January 2026. Adding a complex layer to the investigation, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, stated that Lavín Romero was reportedly being investigated for alleged links to criminal organizations, including the Aparicio and Huazulco groups. These groups are associated with serious crimes such as kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, and homicide in the region. The investigation also reportedly included the arrest of his mother-in-law, Andrea N., known as 'La Patrona,' who served as municipal treasurer and was identified as a potential operator for these criminal structures.
