Slank's Album 'Republik Fufufafa' Carries Social Criticism

Indonesian rock band Slank has launched their 26th full-length studio album, titled "Republik Fufufafa." The Jakarta-based group, comprising Bimbim, Kaka, Ridho, Ivan, and Abdee, released the album on June 5, 2026, coinciding with World Environment Day. Prior to the album's release, they unveiled two singles, "Republik Fufufafa" and "PPN 12%," along with their music videos on YouTube.

The album contains 10 tracks, including "Republik Fufufafa," "Rusak Ancur," "Rakus," "Di Dekatmu," "My Rinduku," "Papa Sid," "PPN 12%," "Bunga Rindu," "Buka Baju," and "Ku Tak Mungkin." Slank delves into themes of love, environmental concerns, social issues, and the lives of young people. Bimbim noted that the band continues to embed social criticism within their music, citing "Jangan Rakus" as an example.

All are news that exists, then we turn it into a song. Because the word 'Republik Fufufafa' is very sexy for us, that's why it's also made the album title.

Many songs on "Republik Fufufafa" draw inspiration from real-life events and news reports about Indonesia's condition. Bimbim explained that the phrase 'Republik Fufufafa' itself felt compelling and was chosen as the album title. For instance, the song "PPN 12%" addresses the government's perceived funding shortages for national development, touching upon the significant financial flows in activities like gambling, drugs, and prostitution, and the alleged involvement of corrupt officials. Slank aims to draw public attention to the darker aspects of the nation.

Vocalist Kaka emphasized that the album's narratives are not fictional but reflect current events. He described their creative process: "We don't know who Fufufafa really is, but we have empty melodies that need lyrics. When we read the newspaper, we create lyrics from it. Most of the songs on the new album are made that way." The band also experimented with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the music video for "Rusak Ancur," a song criticizing the exploitation of nature by capital and the state. Bimbim views AI as a new technological tool, stating, "AI is a technology we consider a new toy. Slank is not afraid of change and technology; rather, I think AI is a new slave for us." He believes AI should be utilized effectively rather than feared.
