Slovak Firefighting Module Arrives in France to Combat Wildfires

A Slovak contingent of ground firefighters has successfully reached France, ready to join the efforts against the nation's persistent wildfires. Upon arrival, the Slovak firefighters unloaded their equipment, organized materials, and completed all necessary preparations to commence their assigned tasks, as announced on Saturday via social media by the Fire and Rescue Service of the Slovak Republic.

The Slovak team participated in a coordination meeting with their French counterparts on Saturday morning. During this meeting, they received updates on the current situation, discussed deployment strategies, and outlined further procedures. Following this, they were dispatched to the municipality of La Carreyre le Tempe, according to the social media post.

France has been grappling with severe wildfires for several weeks, a crisis intensified by a series of deadly heatwaves that have significantly dried out vegetation and riverbeds. Scientists attribute these extreme weather events to human-induced climate change, as reported by AFP. Thousands of firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, have been deployed across France to combat the destructive blazes. Several countries, including Slovakia, have provided assistance.

Twenty Slovak firefighters, along with 19 units of specialized equipment including vehicles, traveled to the Gironde department near Bordeaux on Thursday. Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok confirmed these details at a press conference on Thursday. The deployment underscores the international cooperation in addressing climate-related disasters.
