Slovak teen gains 5cm after spinal surgery to correct deformity

A rare medical case has captured attention after an 18-year-old patient in Slovakia experienced a significant increase in height following spinal surgery. Martin, who was diagnosed with Scheuermann's disease, underwent a procedure at the University Hospital in Žilina. The condition, which affects intervertebral discs, had caused a pronounced curvature of his spine and persistent pain.

Before the surgery, Martin measured 204 centimeters. Post-operation, he now stands at 209 centimeters, an increase of approximately five centimeters. Medical professionals clarified that this is not a result of accelerated growth but rather the straightening of his spine. The correction of the deformity allowed him to regain height lost due to the spinal curvature.

The complex intervention was led by chief physician Juraj Popluhár and involved a multidisciplinary team. Hospital representatives emphasized the crucial role of various specialists, including doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, in the operation's success.
