Slovenia: Firefighters Continue Battling Large Blaze in Bovec

Firefighters are continuing their efforts to extinguish a significant fire on Planja in Bovec, Slovenia. Dejan Logar, spokesperson for the Bovec Fire Brigade Association, stated that the fire remains active but did not spread substantially overnight.

Currently, 110 firefighters from the North Primorska and Gorenjska regions are engaged in the operation. Aerial support, including firefighting planes, a military helicopter, and a drone, is expected to be deployed again. The fire, which ignited from an underground source, had consumed about 12 hectares of steep and difficult-to-access terrain by Friday evening.

On Friday, approximately 95 firefighters from Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Idrija, and Cerkno were involved in the firefighting efforts. They were assisted by members of the Civil Protection special unit with drones and the Bovec Mountain Rescue Service. Due to the fire's scale, the national protection and rescue plan was activated on Friday afternoon, enabling the deployment of additional resources from across the country. Colleagues from Kranjska Gora joined the firefighters on Saturday, Logar confirmed.

The Strmec-Mangart road is closed due to the firefighting operations, and authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area.
