Slovenia prepares to cut heating oil taxes

The Slovenian Ministry of Finance is preparing to amend the excise tax law to lower taxes on heating oil, a move that could also benefit agricultural diesel users. Current legislation limits such tax reductions, but the ministry acknowledges the significant impact of energy price fluctuations on economic conditions, particularly within the agricultural sector.

Andrej Šircelj, the Finance Minister, is spearheading the effort to adjust the taxation of heating oil. The ministry stated that it is closely monitoring energy price trends and their detrimental effects on business operations. Heating oil is also known as agricultural diesel due to its use in farm machinery, highlighting its importance for the country's food production.

The ministry plans to send the draft legislation for reducing excise duties on heating oil to the government and the European Commission for review this week. Officials anticipate that the new regulations will come into effect in the latter half of September. However, the ministry has not yet disclosed specific details, leaving uncertainty about whether the tax reduction will apply solely to agricultural use or be a general cut for all consumers of heating oil.

Meanwhile, discussions regarding potential tax adjustments for gasoline and diesel fuel are also underway at the European Union level. This broader context suggests a coordinated effort across the region to mitigate the impact of high energy costs.
