Slovenia votes in strongly pro-Israel Jansa as new PM after years of hostility towards Jewish State

Janez Janša secured his fourth term as Slovenia's prime minister on May 22, 2026, signaling a sharp departure from his predecessor's policies toward Israel. Janša, a long-time supporter of the Jewish State, garnered 51 votes in the 90-seat parliament, a decisive win that reshterms the country's political direction.

Israel has the unequivocal right to defend itself against Hamas' attacks, we stand with Israel.

Under the previous administration led by Robert Golob, Slovenia had adopted a stance increasingly hostile to Israel. This included recognizing a Palestinian state in May 2024, imposing sanctions on Israeli officials Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich in July 2025, and enacting a travel ban on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Slovenia also implemented an arms embargo on Israel and boycotted the Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel's participation.

Janša has been a vocal critic of these policies, condemning the recognition of Palestine as "illegal." He has repeatedly affirmed Israel's right to defend itself, stating, "Israel has the unequivocal right to defend itself against Hamas' attacks, we stand with Israel." He has also strongly denounced Iran's actions against Israel and expressed concern over alleged financial support for Iran through Slovenian state banks.

Furthermore, Janša has actively spoken out against antisemitism, particularly following the attack on the Jewish community in Sydney during a Hanukkah celebration in 2025. He extended Passover greetings to the Jewish community in 2026, demonstrating a consistent engagement with Jewish affairs. His close relationship with Yossi Dagan, head of the Shomron Regional Council, further underscores his pro-Israel stance.
