Slovenian Hockey Chief Rakovec Seeks Top IIHF Post

Matjaž Rakovec, the current head of the Slovenian Ice Hockey Association (HZS), is among the nine candidates vying for the presidency of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The official list of candidates for the IIHF Council for the upcoming term was released after preliminary checks.

Rakovec, who recently secured his fifth term leading the Slovenian association, is also running for the positions of first vice president and IIHF Council member. He expressed that the candidacy for IIHF president is a significant honor and responsibility. Rakovec believes his knowledge, international experience, and inclusive approach can contribute to the global development of ice hockey. He emphasized the importance of ensuring both large and small hockey nations have a voice in decision-making to build a strong future for the sport.

The candidacy is seen as further validation for Slovenian hockey, recognizing the HZS as an active and credible member of the international hockey community. The elections for the new IIHF leadership are scheduled to occur during the IIHF's regular semi-annual congress on October 2, 2024, on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
