Slovenian Parliament Prepares for Crucial Vote on Three Consultative Referendums

The Slovenian National Assembly is in the final stages of preparation for a significant extraordinary session scheduled for tomorrow. The primary agenda item is the vote on the scheduling of three consultative referendums, a move that will allow citizens to voice their opinions on key national issues.

Earlier this week, the relevant parliamentary committees convened to review and approve the decrees for these referendums. Concurrently, amendments to the Public Servants Act, which aim to abolish the civil service council, have also been confirmed by these committees. This legislative action signals a potential shift in the structure of public administration.

The Culture Committee discussed the date for the announcement of electoral activities and the date of voting, not the content of the proposal for the announcement of a consultative referendum.

One of the committees, the Culture Committee, held a notably brief session lasting only 20 minutes. This meeting was the first of three parliamentary committee sessions dedicated to deciding the scheduling of the referendums. Despite the brevity, the committee addressed the referendum concerning the abolition of mandatory contributions for RTV Slovenia programs.

During the Culture Committee's session, Chairperson Alenka Jeraj of the SDS party reminded members that the discussion should focus on the dates for the referendum's announcement and voting, rather than the substance of the proposal itself. However, Sara Žibrat from the Freedom Movement party soon brought up the proposed amendments to the RTV Slovenia Act and the Media Act, which the Ministry of Culture had recently published for inter-departmental coordination and review by the government's legislative service.
