Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar struggles with media storm after car accident

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar has publicly shared her profound emotional distress following a car accident that occurred over a week ago. In a Facebook post, she described the incident as having triggered a "tsunami of misinformation" and an overwhelming level of media attention that she finds difficult to manage.

"I am the president, but I am also just a human being and I must not forget that I am not a machine. It is hard for me, very hard. And not just because of myself," Pirc Musar wrote. She extended her struggles to her husband, son, parents, sister, and two friends who were in the car with her, as well as her security detail and others supporting her through this difficult time.

Pirc Musar acknowledged that while physical injuries, like her fractured collarbone from not wearing a seatbelt, will heal, the emotional recovery will take much longer. She reiterated her commitment to paying the fine for the traffic violation. She also expressed deep regret for the distress her friends, who were passengers in the car, are experiencing.

The president addressed the intense scrutiny, noting that while she can travel with an unbuckled friend to informal events, the legal privacy within a car is comparable to that at home. She also condemned rumors of an impeachment, calling them a breach of good taste. Pirc Musar defended her friendships, particularly with a close friend who holds Russian citizenship, emphasizing that she judges people by their heart and soul, not their nationality. She clarified that this friend also holds Slovenian citizenship, obtained under normal legal conditions as a top athlete, which included security checks.

Reflecting on the current media climate, Pirc Musar lamented that "anything goes" in the pursuit of sensational articles and contributions, leaving her feeling like a person who cannot have friends without them first undergoing security checks.
