Slovenian right wing considers Pličanič for Ljubljana mayoral race

Could Senko Pličanič become the figure chosen to challenge Ljubljana’s long-standing mayor? Slovenia’s Democrats are discussing that possibility with governing coalition parties and Resnica, according to Television Slovenia and POP TV.

Pličanič, a former justice minister and a member of the Democrats, confirmed to Television Slovenia that talks are underway about running as an independent candidate with their support. He said Ljubljana, like other municipalities, deserves competent management and “a change after these long years of a single leader” at the Ljubljana city authority.

He also pointed to the issues he considers close to his professional experience: urban planning, environmental protection, energy and transport. The potential candidacy was discussed as the Democrats focused on preparations for local elections.

Party leader Anže Logar said the Democrats plan to create lists and programs in most Slovenian municipalities and urged members to take an active role. The party has 75 local branches, he said, but still needs to build organizations in places where it has none. The party has not yet made key decisions about candidates in the most important cities.

Logar said he wants a strong Ljubljana candidate backed by the current government who would “end Zoran Janković’s 20-year rule.” Deputy leader Janez Demšar said local elections should be a contest of concrete action rather than grand words. Logar also announced a party congress by the end of the year, along with a congress for the party’s youth wing.
