Smoke Arena to Host Top Pitmasters from Panama and Costa Rica in Elimination Tournament

Panama is gearing up to host a historic event in competitive barbecue culture. From August 21-22, 2026, the Laboratorio BBQ and Padel City Brisas del Golf will stage "Smoke Arena: Batalla de Naciones," the inaugural tournament pitting Panama's and Costa Rica's top pitmasters against each other in a high-stakes, direct elimination format.

The competition centers on the Boston Butt, a challenging pork cut that demands mastery of the "low & slow" barbecue technique. This method involves hours of cooking at low temperatures with smoke to achieve the perfect pulled pork texture. Only the most skilled pitmasters will be able to conquer this test.

Unlike other culinary contests, Smoke Arena features a "no second chances" rule; each duel determines advancement or elimination. A digital tabulation system overseen by the Panamanian Barbecue Association ensures transparency, while certified judges assess presentation, texture, flavor, and technical execution. Jorge Cabredo, an organizing committee member, emphasized the pressure: "Here, cooking well just once isn't enough. Every decision can determine your survival or elimination."

Panama will field eight representatives: Javier Córdoba, Mario Reyes, Alex Cheng, Jair Rojas, Luis Puyol, Robbie Iglesias, Luis Bonilla, and Roberto Moreno, led by captain Boris Moreno. Costa Rica counters with Jesús Alvarado, Miguel Agüero, Jonny Chávez Jiménez, Marvin Rodríguez, Jordy Cano, Enmanuel López, Wilson Cerdas Romero, and David Carrillo, captained by Aaron Laurent. A special attraction will be the "Clash of Legends," a parallel showdown between the two captains.

The official draw for pairings will take place on August 21 at Laboratorio BBQ. The following day, the competition commences at Padel City Brisas del Golf, where strategy, technique, and fire control will crown the champion nation. Beyond the competition, Smoke Arena aims to position Panama as a leading center for competitive barbecue in Central America and foster exchange among the region's top exponents of this growing gastronomic discipline.
