SNTE backs Sheinbaum ahead of second government report, praises defense of public education

Mexico’s National Union of Education Workers has publicly endorsed Claudia Sheinbaum ahead of her second government report, praising what it calls her firm defense of public education and her social policy focused on well-being, social justice and reducing inequality.

In a statement issued for the occasion, the SNTE described the government’s commitment to education as a pillar of national development and transformation. It said sustained investment had helped make education a fundamental right more effective under Sheinbaum’s administration.

The recognition public that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has expressed for our union is a demonstration of respect for those of us who work every day putting education at the service of the people; for this reason, we appreciate that the process has begun to eliminate USICAMM and build a new system that guarantees the rights of teachers, one that is fair, equitable, inclusive and transparent.

The union pointed to Welfare Scholarships reaching 22 million students and the creation of 200,000 places in upper-secondary education. It also highlighted the removal of the high-school admission exam, the consolidation of free higher education and 245,000 new places in public institutions.

Other measures cited by the SNTE included what it called a historic 2026 investment in education infrastructure, worth nearly 59 billion pesos. The union also praised efforts to protect education workers’ rights, including a 19% increase in salaries during the current six-year term.

In the SNTE, we responsibly assume our active participation in the project of a free, just, humanist, democratic and sovereign nation led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

The SNTE welcomed the start of a process to eliminate USICAMM and build a new system for teachers’ rights that it said should be fair, equitable, inclusive and transparent. “The recognition public that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has expressed for our union is a demonstration of respect for those of us who work every day putting education at the service of the people,” the statement said.

The union added that Sheinbaum had shown the capacity to maintain an independent national project and defend Mexico’s sovereignty. It reaffirmed its full support for the president, whom it praised for her legitimacy, leadership, courage, talent, hard work and “genuine love for the people.”
