Social Democratic leader: Kristersson puts Sweden Democrats before Sweden

The Social Democratic leader was responding to reports that a Sweden Democrats official had links to Russian interests. She described the disclosure as “a serious security crisis” and said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson had a duty to answer “relevant questions,” including what measures he was taking to protect Swedish interests.

Peter Hultqvist, the Social Democrat who chairs Parliament’s defense committee, said Kristersson should be summoned to an additional committee meeting. Kristersson said on Friday that he “of course would not” attend such a meeting. Hultqvist also called for an investigation by Säpo, Sweden’s security service, and for Gustav Gellerbrant and his partner to be suspended from Parliament and the Government Offices.

“What has been revealed is deeply worrying, and the longer the prime minister goes without answering, the more questions are raised about those people,” Hultqvist said at a digital news conference.

The magazine Expo reported on Thursday that a Sweden Democrats employee, a woman who moved from Russia to Sweden in 2006, had allegedly spent more than a decade sharing articles and posts carrying Russian narratives from Russian state bodies, the state-backed news service RT and other channels associated with Russian propaganda and disinformation. The report also said she had praised Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The woman is currently on parental leave and lives with Gellerbrant, a senior Sweden Democrats official in the Government Offices. He heads the party’s coordination office, where key issues under the Tidö Agreement are negotiated.
