Social Leader Duver Taquinas Recounts Illegal Detention in Colombia's Cauca Region

Human rights defender Duver Taquinas recounted his harrowing experience of being illegally detained and interrogated by armed men in the northern region of Cauca, Colombia. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, June 28, has reignited alarms regarding the security of social leaders operating in the conflict-affected area.

Taquinas described the encounter, which took place around 8:50 p.m. on the road leading to the Las Pirámides sector in Corinto. He was violently approached, with individuals pointing firearms at him. They proceeded to search him and inquire about his travel plans. Taquinas characterized the moments as filled with "great tension and uncertainty" but was ultimately allowed to continue his journey unharmed.

Despite escaping the ordeal without physical injury, Taquinas emphasized the gravity of the situation and the constant risks faced by those engaged in community work in Cauca. He stated, "These types of situations generate concern and highlight the risks we face who carry out social and community work in our territories."

Following the incident, Taquinas expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by his community, friends, and social organizations. He reaffirmed his commitment to continuing his community work in the area and issued an urgent appeal for peace, respect for life, and security guarantees for social leadership in Corinto and the broader Cauca department. Local authorities have yet to officially comment on the identity of the armed group responsible for the harassment.
